Mothers’ Union Acting Director of Communications and Marketing, Rachael Anderson, writes…
“It is an absolute joy to be able to celebrate with you 150 years of the Mothers’ Union. We are so grateful that you have rolled up your sleeves and got stuck in. You have made such a difference, not just to the church, [but] to your communities and to the world. You are salt and light and we are grateful.”
With these words, The Most Rev Dame Sarah Mullally, Archbishop of Canterbury and Patron of Mothers’ Union (MU), welcomed more than 1,500 members, church leaders, supporters and partners to St Paul’s Cathedral on 10 June for a service celebrating 150 years of faith, service and transformation.
The service gave thanks for the vision of Mothers’ Union founder Mary Sumner, whose simple idea of bringing women together in her Hampshire parish in 1876 has grown into a global Christian movement of four million members in more than 80 countries. Although founded within the Anglican tradition, Mothers’ Union welcomes into membership anyone who supports its aims and values, bringing together Christians who share a commitment to prayer, service and advocacy.
Today, our members put their faith into action in communities across the world. Working alongside churches, charities and local organisations, they support families, tackle poverty, address gender-based violence, strengthen relationships, promote literacy and help people and families experiencing hardship. From projects supporting prison families and survivors of modern slavery to community outreach and parenting initiatives, members respond to local needs while remaining united through a global fellowship of prayer and service.

Reflecting on our anniversary, MU Worldwide President Kathleen Snow said: “Mothers’ Union has always been about connection; the belief that it takes a village to support communities, and that we are that village, a global one.’ She added that, as the movement marks its 150th anniversary, members continue to “bring hope, advocate for change and build communities rooted in dignity, justice and love.”
Partnership has always been central to Mothers’ Union’s mission. Across Britain & Ireland and around the world, members work alongside Christians from many traditions, recognising that the challenges facing families and communities are best addressed together. These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to living out the Gospel through practical service.
As one of Churches Together in England’s Charities and Networks in Association, we are proud to be part of a wider movement of churches seeking to serve their communities together. The 150th anniversary is an opportunity not only to celebrate a remarkable history, but also to renew our shared commitment to building flourishing relationships, supporting people most in need and witnessing to God’s love through faith in action.
As celebrations continue throughout this anniversary year, our movement looks forward with hope and confidence, building on Mary Sumner’s vision and working alongside churches and partners to ensure that future generations continue to experience the transforming power of faith, compassion and community.
