JustMoney Movement’s recently revised Ethical Buying Guide is designed to support churches to develop their own ethical purchasing policy. It builds on conversations JustMoney Movement has had with a wide range of churches seeking to live out their values through their use of money. The guide includes discussion questions, case studies and information on schemes like Fairtrade, the Fair Tax Mark and the Living Wage.
JustMoney Movement believes that the need for Christians to make ethical choices with money and campaign for better corporate behaviour is greater than ever.
Think locally. The cost-of-living crisis means that even those in work are struggling to make ends meet. Buying from businesses that are committed to fair pay and decent working conditions is one way of shaping a fairer society. Buying local, where possible, can help strengthen local economies.
Think globally. Exploitation is deeply rooted in complex supply chains that cause harm. The world is facing a climate crisis and the loss of natural habitats. Congregations can take steps with their spending to protect God’s creation and stand in solidarity with global neighbours.
Rosie Venner, JustMoney Movement’s Director of Movement Building said: “Collectively, churches in the UK have stewardship over millions of pounds. Individually our actions can seem small, but together we have more spending ‘power’. Our financial decisions are part of how we participate in God’s mission. We can love others, restore relationships and pursue justice by making thoughtful decisions with our purchasing, as we do with our giving.”
Case studies in the Ethical Buying Guide come from across the traditions, including the Salvation Army, the Baptist Union, the Church of England and the Quakers. If your church has an ethical purchasing policy or a story to tell about its spending choices – JustMoney Movement would love to hear about it, to continue to share good practice in this area. Send your stories and photos to [email protected].
JustMoney Movement’s work, resources and campaigns equip Christians to take tangible action to connect their faith and their finances, for a fairer, greener world.
