Silent walking vigil for peace – 19 September

One of the coordinators of this central London event, Andrew West, extends an invitation to all CTE national Member Churches and individual Christians.

Quakers in Britain are organising a Silent Walking Vigil for Peace in central London on 19 September 2026 – the weekend closest to the UN International Day of Peace. While this is a Quaker-led event, everyone who shares a hope for peace is welcome to join in.

The vigil will begin with a short meeting for worship in the Quaker way. We will be walking quietly at a slow pace. A walking vigil is an inherently peaceful activity: not a protest, not a march, not a demonstration.  The silent walking vigil is a positive, public witness for peace.  We want to show our solidarity and care for those impacted by violence, conflict and war.

Hundreds have already signed up to attend and we are aiming for a “loud silence” witnessing for peace in central London.   We have an inclusive vision for the vigil and want to make sure that a warm welcome to participate is circulated far and wide.

The gathering point for the vigil is in Victoria Embankment Gardens at noon on Saturday 19 September.  The vigil will conclude in the courtyard at St Martin in the Fields, just off Trafalgar Square.  The website https://quakervigilforpeace.org/  includes further information about the vigil, including all the necessary practical details.

Walk with us. Witness for peace.
