Introducing Houses of Light

Dr Rebekah Brettle, the Founder and CEO of Houses of Light, formerly the Neighbourhood Prayer Network, shares the story behind their new vision and name.

In late 2024, the members of the Neighbourhood Prayer Network (NPN) felt God was leading us into fresh vision and a new name and in September 2025, Houses of Light was born. In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus says that we are ‘the light of the world’ and that we are to be salt and light, so that people will see our ‘good deeds’ and praise our Father in Heaven.

NPN launched in 2012 at the National Day of Prayer and Worship held at Wembley stadium. Since 2012, we have seen lots of testimonies of the lonely finding friendships among neighbours, neighbours starting to go to church and becoming Christians and local crime rates dropping. One of our more remarkable testimonies was of one person finding a neighbour unwell in response to a dream they had had the night before. We have also heard of people praying for neighbours for healing and their neighbours improving or being healed.

Houses of Light aims to see a House of Light on every street in the UK, an individual or household – praying for neighbours, caring for neighbours and sharing Jesus with the people living closest to us. We believe that in our first ten years, there will be five new disciples of Jesus on every street in the UK where there is a House of Light.

This project costs no money, and we suggest people pray once a week on a Friday. It has proven to be a catalyst for unity across churches of many different denominations and we invite Churches Together groups to adopt this in their postcode areas.

We also want to see ‘Beacons of Light’ forming locally. A ‘Beacon of Light’ is three Christians from three separate streets, coming together to pray for at least half an hour each week. We suggest that one once a month, these meetings are held in person, the other three times virtually over zoom or WhatsApp. People praying 10 minutes for the 3 streets, 10 minutes for the postcode area like M8, SA10 for example and 10 minutes for all the streets in the UK, seems to work well.

If you or your Churches Together group want to be part of this, sign up on our website and we will send a weekly email with prayer, care and share suggestions. We also produce prayer and outreach resources such as prayer walking guides and 40-day prayer guides. These are all free and our latest 40-day guide, ‘Pursuing Holiness in Our Streets’ will be available on our website in the next 2 weeks.
